Guardian ad Litem
A Guardian ad Litem (GAL) is a neutral advocate appointed to represent and protect the best interests of a child. The GAL’s primary goal is to help ensure the child’s safety, well-being and needs remain at the center of the legal process.
As requested by the court, a Guardian ad Litem may research and assess the child’s circumstances, speak with relevant individuals, review records, advocate for the child’s best interests and monitor the child’s situation. The GAL then provides the court with objective information and recommendations.
A Guardian ad Litem may be appointed in a variety of matters, including:
-
Paternity
-
Guardianship
-
Divorce and custody
-
Adoption
-
Juvenile delinquency
-
